Frequently Asked Questions
How long will my order take to complete?

Our standard turn time for Molded CDs, BCards™ & Shaped CDs, and Custom Printed Blanks is 15 working days after final approval of all materials. Turn time for CD-R Duplication, DVD-R Duplication, Short Run Custom Printed Blanks is 2-12 working days after final approval of all materials. Turn time for High Speed Cassettes is 20 working days after final approval of all materials.

'Working days' do not include Saturdays, Sundays or holidays. Turn times may increase slightly between September and December. These turn times are not guarantees. Turn time for any project may vary depending on our production backlog and/or unforseen issues, and no discount will be offered for any project taking longer to complete.

Why does it take that long?

For instance, it really only takes a production line 45 minutes to produce 1000 CDs, however every 45 minute slot for the next 12-15 days is already filled with other people's orders. Occasionally, we'll be able to slip an extra order into the schedule to fill out a day's production, but we make no promises that we can do that with any particular order.

Can I pay a rush charge to get them sooner?

Regarding rush orders, this is our thinking: Let's say you placed an order with us three weeks ago and expected your discs to ship today for arrival in time for your release date. Maybe you've spent money advertising a big release party or informed a lot of important people that your CDs will be available.

Now let's say you get a call from Raintree informing you that your order will not be ready as expected, but will be late because we've accepted a rush order from someone who threw a bunch of money at us to get their job done first. Would you be upset? Annoyed? Disappointed? We think you would be; maybe even enough to not call us again when you need more CDs.

To that end, it is our policy to schedule all production strictly on a first-come, first-serve basis.

One last thought about rush orders: Hurrying through any process will substantially increase the odds that something will be missed, forgotten, or overlooked. Our goal is excellence via thoroughness with every order we accept. Therefore, we respectfully ask that you do not request a production deadline other than those described above.

So Raintree doesn't accept rush orders at all?

No, we do not.

What do '+/-10%' and 'overruns' refer to?

This refers to the actual quantity of product you are billed for on a given order. For example, a Molded CD order for 1000 units is considered complete if we've produced a quantity within 10% of your actual order.

In other words, if you do order 1000 molded CDs, you could recieve, and be billed for, between 900 and 1100 units. The extra (or deficit) units are billed (or credited) on a per-unit basis, and your final invoice will reflect the actual quantity delivered.

Why can't I get exactly 1000 CDs?

Let's say, for instance, you've ordered 1000 CDs with printwork in jewelcases. We usually print around 1100 pieces of your booklets and traycards. Some, more often than not, get damaged through handling and machine-loading. The same goes for your CDs; they are first molded, then later silk-screened. Some discs may be lost due to printing errors. Some more may be lost during handling or the packaging process.

We compensate for any such losses in order to provide you with the quantity you've ordered. In the end, you will only be billed for the exact number of complete copies you receive, even if that quantity is less than 1000 units. The actual percentage of acceptable over- or underruns depends on the total quantity ordered.

How will Raintree ship my order?

Our normal shipping method for most orders is UPS Ground. Larger orders are palletized and shipped via common carrier.

We can also use overnight, two-day & three-day services. Please call our toll-free number if you'd like more information about shipping costs for these services.

When should I schedule a release date for my project?

We urge you to not schedule any events based on your project until after you actually have possession of the final product.

We try very hard to work with your tenative schedule if it is reasonable and within available turn times, however, you must be aware that a large portion of the preparation for your project should take place before your project reaches us. Any deficiencies in preparation will only cause delays once we receive your order.

Finally, setting a release date in stone before you actually have product available can be a recipe for disaster, and Raintree will not be held liable for any missed 'deadlines'.

can Raintree provide a bar code for my project?

Yes. Please see our bar code page for more details.

Can I get proofs of my project before production begins?

Absolutely, in fact we strongly encourage you to do so.

Our quickest and least expensive proofing method is by posting files in a private folder on our website for your review. We can also send color laser proofs via next-day delivery for more color accuracy. If you are critical regarding colors, you may also request PolaProofs or Matchprints, but these will add extra turn time (and cost) to your order.

Finally, for the really particular client, we can provide Superproofs™, which include best available proofs for your project including a one-off of your tape or disc.

Can I see some examples of Raintree's design work?

Sure... take a look here for more information regarding our graphic design services.

Can I have my own graphic artist design my project?

Yes. We have specific downloadable templates available for your designer here. Our templates are all designed for a single specific product, so you or your designer will want to be sure you are getting the proper files. The best way to accomplish this is to utilize our VirtualCSR™ program to build your project. It will automatically provide you with all the correct templates you'll need.

Please note that your layouts should be in one of the following Mac or PC file formats:We urge you to confirm that your designer can provide these formats before you hire them. We can accept some other formats, but you may incur additional costs to have your files brought up to spec if provided in other formats.

Can I provide the film necessary for manufacturing my project?

We do not accept film from outside sources, as we cannot guarantee final quality based on using such film.

My engineer is providing a CD-R he calls a 'glass master'. Will this save me any money?

No. What he's actually providing you is called a PMCD (Pre-Mastered Compact Disc). We still have to make a glass master for replicated CDs, or a running master for cassettes. A glass master is used to make a stamper that will in turn be used to manufacture CDs. Your stamper or running master is what we keep on file in order to make reprints.

All of these services are included in our pricing.

I'm planning to put a Tom Petty cover song on my disc...

You'll need to obtain a proper licensing from the copyright owner (other than yourself) of any material or data that will appear on your CD or cassette.

Please see our anti-piracy page for more info.

How can I pay for my order?

We require a 50% deposit on all orders, payable by check, money order or credit card.

Your final balance will be due prior to shipping. We can charge the balance to a credit card or ship your project COD (Collect On Delivery). If we ship your project COD, you'll need a cashier's check or money order for the proper amount, payable to Raintree, available for the UPS driver. Also, a $10.00 charge will be added to your final invoice.

We also offer 30 day net billing to institutions with an approved credit application on file. Please contact us for a credit application.

Will I have to pay sales tax?

All Raintree products and services are subject to Pennsylvania's 6% sales tax if picked up in person or if shipped to a Pennsylvania address, unless you provide us with proof of Pennsylvania tax-exempt status.

For orders delivered outside Pennsylvania, we are not obligated to collect sales tax. Please note that while we may not be obligated collect sales tax for your out-of-state order, you may still be subject to sales tax in your own state, and you are responsible for paying that tax to the appropriate agency.

Do I need an official copyright for my original material before I get it reproduced?

No.

Technically speaking, you already have a copyright once your material is put into tangible physical form (ie; recorded on CD or tape). However, we urge you to register your copyright with the Library of Congress as soon as possible, as you wouldn't be able to file any kind of infringement suit without one, even if someone has blatantly stolen your material.

We also encourage you to include the © and Phonocopyright symbols on your packaging, to serve notice that you hold specific rights to the intellectual property within.

Will my CD display the song titles on text-capable CD players?

Not unless you specifically request this feature.

CD-Text capabilities are not automatic. They must be specifically encoded on your master disc. If you want your titles to be readable by text-capable CD players, you must either provide us with a master disc that is already encoded as such (and let us know that it is!), or request that we provide the encoding for you. This service is available at our regular hourly pre-mastering rate.

How does Raintree handle re-orders?

Most re-orders are just a phone call away. We keep all materials needed to reprint your project on file. As with initial orders, we require a 50% deposit for re-orders, with the balance due prior to shipment.

Please note that any changes to your project, no matter how slight, would move it out of the re-order category, and would be considered (and priced) as a new order.
